Key Points

  • The Pakistan government approved participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 but directed the team to skip the India match on February 15.
  • ICC stated that selective participation violates the contract signed by PCB, stressing that all qualified teams must compete equally.
  • Pakistan faces potential sanctions for government interference in an IOC-affiliated sporting body’s affairs if the boycott continues.

Bhubaneswar, Feb 4: The ongoing row over the India-Pakistan match of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on February 15 is expected to conclude in a couple of days.

Multiple reports suggest that next 48 hours will be crucial as one of the two things is likely - Pakistan might make a u-turn and reverse their call to boycott the match against their arch-rivals, or the International Cricket Council (ICC) will sanction Pakistan for violation of contract.

The row started after the Pakistan government issued a statement on the team’s participation at the T20 World Cup through a social media post. The government gave green signal to the Salman Agha-led side to feature in the tournament, but directed the team to boycott their group stage match against India.

“The Government of Islamic Republic of Pakistan grants approval to the Pakistan cricket team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026. However, the Pakistan cricket team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15th February, 2026 against India,” the statement, which was posted on Sunday, reads. The post triggered a chain of events, including a response from ICC.

ICC mentioned that the boycott of just one match will be a violation contract, which was co-signed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The contract clearly states that India and Pakistan agree to feature in ICC events and neutral venues will host the matches with each other. In addition, the contract also says that there is no force majeure - superior force - in the agreement.

So let’s just find out what ICC’s Terms of Participation says in such cases. The terms state that a Full Member nation must try their best to address and resolve the concerns, raised by their government.

So there is a possibility that PCB could be asked, during the dialogue among the representatives of ICC and PCB in coming days, to do the same and make an effort. As the Pakistan government has singled out the India match, PCB might be asked to clarify whether the stance to be applied for all sports.

Latest reports claim that Pakistan could face sanctions over their government’s interference in a International Olympic Committee-affiliated sporting body’s affairs.

While the PCB is yet to communicate with the ICC on the matter, the international body issued a statement questioning the Pakistani government’s decision of “selective participation”.

“While the ICC awaits official communication from the PCB, this position of selective participation is difficult to reconcile with the fundamental premise of a global sporting event where all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms per the event schedule. ICC tournaments are built on sporting integrity, competitiveness, consistency and fairness, and selective participation undermines the spirit and sanctity of the competitions,” reads the ICC statement.
