Controversy Brews Over "Annapoorani": FIR Filed Against Nayanthara's Film

Mumbai, Jan 09:  Actress Nayanthara's recent film, "Annapoorani," has landed in hot water after an FIR was filed against it in Mumbai for allegedly promoting "Love Jihad" and hurting religious sentiments. The film, which marked Nayanthara's 75th project, received a lukewarm response at the box office but has now sparked controversy for its content.

The complaint, filed at the LT Marg Police Station, specifically targets a scene featuring actor Jai's character stating that Lord Ram was a meat eater. This portrayal, according to the complainant, hurts the religious sentiments of Hindus.

This isn't the first time "Annapoorani" has faced criticism. Upon its digital release on Netflix, the Hindu IT Cell lodged a complaint against the film for allegedly misrepresenting the Ramayana and criticizing Lord Ram. The controversy stemmed from a scene where the protagonist, played by Nayanthara, performs the Islamic prayer Namaz before a cooking competition. This act, inspired by a college friend's claim that her biryani tasted better after Namaz, was seen as offensive by some viewers.

While the film's director Nilesh Krishnaa has yet to respond to the FIR, the controversy has reignited discussions about religious representation and sensitivity in cinema. "Annapoorani," which revolves around a young woman's culinary aspirations amidst societal constraints, might have aimed to celebrate female empowerment but has instead found itself embroiled in a complex social and religious debate.

With the FIR filed, it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will unfold and whether the film faces any consequences. The controversy, however, is sure to keep "Annapoorani" in the headlines for the foreseeable future.
