New Delhi, Jan 11: Prashant Tamang, winner of Indian Idol Season 3, died on Sunday morning in Delhi. He was 43. His death was attributed to a suspected cardiac arrest, according to fellow singer and former co-contestant Bhaven Dhanak.

Co-contestant confirms death
Confirming the news, Dhanak said Tamang’s death came without warning. “Given it has happened all of a sudden, we don’t have many details, but it’s been said that it was a cardiac arrest. We are also awaiting information on the funeral,” he said.

Recalling their close bond during Indian Idol, Dhanak said Tamang was a cherished friend and colleague. “We were roommates during our stint on the show, and he was one of the best people you could know. We are all going to miss him a lot. This death has come as a big shock to all of us,” he added.

Dhanak said several Indian Idol contestants were scheduled to meet in Mumbai on Saturday, but Tamang had excused himself as he was in Delhi. “I think we will now all meet and celebrate his legacy,” he said.

Mamata Banerjee condoles death
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief over Tamang’s demise in a post on X, calling it “sudden and untimely.” She recalled his roots in the Darjeeling hills and his earlier association with the Kolkata Police.

From Kolkata Police to national fame
Tamang rose to national prominence in 2007 when he auditioned for Indian Idol Season 3 while serving as a constable with the Kolkata Police. With limited industry backing, his sincerity and voice struck a chord with audiences, particularly in Darjeeling and India’s Northeast.

Voice of a community
After his win, Tamang continued his musical journey with songs such as Bir Gorkhali and Asare Mahinama, which went on to become cultural anthems within the Gorkha community.

Beyond music, Tamang made a mark as an actor. He earned praise for his role as Daniel Lecho in Season 2 of the series Paatal Lok, reinforcing his image as a versatile performer.

He had recently completed shooting for Salman Khan’s 'The Battle of Galwan', which will now stand as his final on-screen appearance.
