Brasília, Jan 6: It sounds like the plot of a late-night debate or a courtroom thriller — but in 2022, it became a medical fact. A 19-year-old woman in Mineiros, a small town in Brazil, gave birth to twin boys who would later be confirmed to have two different biological fathers.

The revelation emerged after questions over paternity led to DNA testing. What doctors uncovered was not a lab error or a testing anomaly, but an extraordinarily rare biological event known as superfecundation -- a phenomenon so uncommon that it has been officially documented only about 20 times worldwide.

What Is Superfecundation?
Superfecundation occurs when a woman releases two eggs during the same ovulation cycle and has sexual relations with more than one partner within a short timeframe. Each egg can then be fertilised by sperm from different men, resulting in twins conceived separately but carried together in the same pregnancy.

According to Dr Jorge Franco, who has studied such cases, superfecundation is “exceptionally rare” and often goes unnoticed unless paternity testing is conducted. “Most people assume twins have the same father. Biology, however, does not always follow assumptions,” he has explained.

Medically, the twins are no different from typical fraternal twins. They develop independently in the womb and face no additional health risks solely due to the condition. The difference lies entirely at the genetic level.
