Dhaka, Dec 28: Dhaka police have said that two prime suspects in the killing of Bangladeshi political activist Osman Hadi fled to India through the Meghalaya border after the attack, according to a report by 'The Daily Star'.

Addressing a press briefing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Centre, Additional Commissioner SN Nazrul Islam said the suspects — Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh — crossed into India via the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh with the help of local associates.

“According to our information, the suspects entered India through the Haluaghat border. After crossing, they were initially received by an individual named Purti. Later, a taxi driver named Sami transported them to Tura city in Meghalaya,” Nazrul Islam was quoted as saying.

He said Bangladeshi authorities have received informal information suggesting that the two individuals who allegedly assisted the suspects — Purti and Sami — have been detained by Indian authorities, though official confirmation is still awaited.

Nazrul Islam said Dhaka police are in contact with Indian authorities through both formal and informal channels to facilitate the arrest and extradition of the suspects. “We are maintaining communication to ensure their arrest and return,” he said.

Osman Hadi was a prominent political activist and a vocal critic of India and the Awami League. He played a key role in last year’s student-led protests, known as the July Uprising, which culminated in the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government. Following the unrest, Hadi launched a political platform called Inqilab Mancha and was preparing to contest the parliamentary elections scheduled for February.

Hadi was shot in the head by masked gunmen in Dhaka on December 12. He was later airlifted to Singapore for treatment, where he died six days later.

His death triggered widespread violence across Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh. Mobs attacked and set fire to the offices of newspapers Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, as well as cultural organisations including Chhayanat and Udichi Shilpi Goshthi. The unrest later spread to central Bangladesh, where a Hindu factory worker was lynched in Mymensingh, further escalating tensions.
