Moscow, Feb 8: Several people, including four Indian students, were injured in a stabbing incident inside a sports hall at a foreign students’ hostel of a university in Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic on Saturday, according to the Indian Embassy in Moscow.

The attack took place at a dormitory of the State Medical University in Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan. Preliminary local media reports said two police officers were also injured while attempting to intervene.

Russia’s Interior Ministry said initial information indicates that a 15-year-old armed with a knife entered the dormitory and attacked students residing there, injuring several of them.

“The attacker resisted arrest, during which two police officers were stabbed. Furthermore, the suspect also inflicted bodily harm on himself,” Interior Ministry spokesperson Maj. Gen. Irina Volk told RTVI.com.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect has been detained. The extent of injuries sustained by the victims and the attacker was not immediately known. The Investigative Committee has launched a probe into the incident.

Calling it an “unfortunate incident”, the Indian Embassy in Moscow said in a statement, “Several people, including four Indian students, have been injured.” The embassy added that officials are closely monitoring the situation and are in touch with Russian authorities.
Officials from the Indian Consulate in Kazan are travelling to Ufa to assist the injured students and coordinate further support, the embassy said.

“Our source from the ground informed that emergency services responded swiftly and the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals,” though official confirmation on the condition of the victims is awaited.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic inside the hostel. Russian media quoted witnesses as saying there was “blood all around” following the attack. Video footage aired by local outlets showed police personnel carrying an injured person through thick snow and emergency responders transporting victims in ambulances.

Russian authorities have not officially disclosed a motive or whether the suspect had any prior connection with the victims.

The Baza channel, which has links to Russian authorities, claimed that the attacker belonged to a banned neo-Nazi outfit. “He belonged to the banned NS/WP neo-Nazi organisation. During the frenzy of attack, he was shouting nationalist slogans about (the) Holocaust,” news agency PTI quoted the channel as saying. The channel also shared an image purportedly showing a swastika drawn on a wall.

The Bashkortostan Republic, particularly Ufa, is a popular destination for Indian students pursuing medical and engineering degrees. The incident has triggered concern among international student communities in the region.
