New Delhi, Aug 18: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday introduced the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha, proposing the inclusion of IIM Guwahati in Assam as an Institute of National Importance (INI). This move marks a significant step in expanding premier management education in India’s North-eastern region.

According to the provisions of the bill, IIM Guwahati will receive a corpus fund of ₹555 crore over five years, from 2025–26 to 2029–30. The bill states that after this period, the institute is expected to be financially self-sustaining through internal revenue generation.

Currently, 21 IIMs are recognized as INIs under the IIM Act, 2017. IIM Guwahati will become the second such institute in the North-east, following IIM Shillong.

The proposal is part of a broader developmental initiative outlined in the Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) signed between the Government of India, the Assam government, and representatives of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA). The MoS includes several projects under the Centre’s Special Development Package (SDP), with the establishment of IIM Guwahati being a key component.

The IIM Act, originally passed in 2017, granted statutory status to 20 IIMs. It was amended in 2023 to include IIM Mumbai. The 2025 amendment continues this trajectory of expanding access to high-quality management education across India.
