Chandigarh, Jan 27: The parents of foreign-based gangster Goldy Brar were arrested on Monday in connection with a 2024 extortion case in Punjab’s Muktsar district, a senior police official said.

Muktsar Senior Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Rana said Brar’s father, Shamsher Singh, and mother, Preetpal Kaur, were taken into custody following an investigation into an extortion complaint filed last year.

The couple owns a house in Adesh Nagar area of Muktsar town, the SSP said, adding that the family originally hails from Faridkot district.

The first information report (FIR) was registered in 2024 on the complaint of a Muktsar resident, police said, without disclosing further details of the alleged extortion.

Goldy Brar, whose real name is Satinderjeet Singh, is one of the main accused in the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala and had earlier claimed responsibility for the killing. He is believed to be currently based in the United States, police said.

Brar went to Canada on a student visa in 2017 and was earlier associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang before parting ways last year. He is now linked to the Brar–Rohit Godara–Kala Jatheri gang.

In 2024, Brar was designated a terrorist under India’s anti-terror law for his alleged role in smuggling high-grade arms, ammunition and explosives into the country using drones.

The arrests come amid an intensified crackdown by Punjab Police against organised crime. Authorities said they have identified and mapped locations connected to around 1,200 associates of 60 foreign-based gangsters and about 600 family members allegedly linked to criminal activities.
