Bhubaneswar,
Jan 18: The annual
bird census has commenced across major wetlands of Odisha, including Chilika
Lake, Hirakud reservoir, Similipal, and Bhitarkanika. Teams of forest
officials, scientists, and trained volunteers are conducting the exercise using
binoculars, cameras, GPS devices, and boats.
In Chilika
Lake, 22 teams comprising 130 members have been deployed across Satapada,
Tangi, Balugaon, Rambha, and Nuapada sectors. Last year, the census recorded
over 11.27 lakh birds, and officials expect higher numbers this year due to
harsher winter conditions.
At Hirakud
reservoir, the census is being carried out across 21 sectors with 32 boats. A
total of 92 members, including 70 experts, are participating. For the first
time, college students have joined the exercise after receiving training.

district, bird counting is underway in Similipal and adjoining forest ranges,
covering more than 100 sites including reservoirs and wetlands. Similarly, in Kendrapara’s
Bhitarkanika region, 18 teams are surveying migratory birds across Mathadiya,
Lakshmiprasadiya, Durgaprasadiya, and Balidiya areas.
Officials from the Forest Department and Odisha Biodiversity Board said the census will provide updated data on bird species and populations, with early indications suggesting an increase in migratory arrivals this year.
