Bhubaneswar, Dec 16: Dhanu Sankranti has a religious significance in Hinduism. This is an auspicious day when Lord Surya will change his position from  Sagittarius (Dhanu) to Capricorn (Makara).

This day, Lord Surya is worshipped with great reverence. People offer Arghya to Lord Surya( The Sun). This year Dhanu Sankranti falls on December 16, 2023.

For Dhanu Sankranti, special rituals are also performed in Srimandir. Gate opening ritual(Dwara Phita Niti) of Lord Jagannath Temple performed at 2 A.M along with that Pahili Bhoga was offered to Lord Jagannath. 

In Pahili Bhoga, Dhanu Muan and pitha made up of black gram, ghee and wheat flour were offered to the lord. 

As per rituals, from today Maa Laxmi will leave for her paternal house for which Maa Yasoda will prepare bhoga for holy trinity. 

Pahili Bhoga will be offered to the holy trinity until Makar Sankranti.
