Penned by 'Kantakabi' Laxmikanta Mohapatra in 1912, the song embodies the essence of Odisha’s unity, heritage, and spirit. The music was first recorded by Gokul Mohanty in 1932, before the modern notation was arranged by the Odissi musician Balakrushna Das.
It was first sung at the Utkala Sammilani at Balasore in 1912, a significant event during Odisha’s struggle to establish itself as an independent province.
It’s worth mentioning that Odisha became the first state in British India to be formed on linguistic basis on 1 April 1936. The date – April 1 – is celebrated as Utkal Divas.
Declared the state anthem of Odisha in 2020, it celebrates the state’s unique cultural identity and inspires patriotism among its citizens.
Translated as “Ode to Mother Utkala,” the anthem captures the pride and resilience of the Odia community. Its poignant lyrics and profound message foster a collective consciousness, resonating across generations.
