Bhubaneswar, Nov 7: With the conclusion of the sacred month of Kartika on November 5, Odisha witnessed a dramatic shift in culinary habits as Chhadakhai celebrations commenced, with record-breaking sales in meat and fish markets. Following a month of vegetarian observance, residents indulged in non-vegetarian fare, leading to a surge in demand across the state.
According to
reports, markets in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and other cities witnessed heavy
footfall from early morning. Vendors reported brisk business, with prices of
popular items like Rohu fish, Hilsa, crabs, mutton, and chicken climbing due to
high demand. Non-vegetarian food prices witnessed a sharp rise during
Chhadakhai celebrations, with Rohi fish selling between ₹200 to ₹250 per
kilogram, Hilsa reaching ₹1,800 per kilogram, and crab priced at ₹1,200.

Similar price trends were observed in Cuttack. Mutton rates varied across
different localities, ranging from ₹750 to ₹900 per kilogram. Market estimates suggest that fish, prawns, and crabs alone accounted for over ₹2.5 crore in sales. Mutton sales are projected to have exceeded ₹4 crore, with total non-vegetarian trade across Odisha expected to surpass ₹7 crore.

Traders sourced livestock and poultry from West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and various districts within Odisha to meet the demand. With wedding season coinciding with the festival, sales remained strong throughout the day.
