Cuttack, Mar 22: A shocking incident has left residents of Rajanagar in disbelief after a woman was killed when a monkey pushed her off the roof of her house. The tragic event occurred in Deula Sahi under Athagarh police limits, where monkey attacks have reportedly been terrorizing locals for months.
According to sources, Sulochana, Wife of Abhimanyu Sahu, had gone to the rooftop on Sunday morning to collect clothes that had been left out to dry. While she was busy gathering them, a monkey suddenly surrounded her. Villagers standing below witnessed the horrifying moment as the monkey pushed her off the roof.
Sulochana fell to the ground in a bloodied state. Family members and villagers rushed her to the local medical facility, but doctors declared her dead upon arrival.
Former sarpanch Mahendra Parida revealed that monkey attacks have been rampant in the area for nearly four months. “Around 100 people have been injured during this period. Despite repeated complaints, the forest department has failed to capture the monkey. They came with nets but could not succeed. Today, the menace has claimed a life,” he said.
Residents expressed anger and frustration at the authorities, demanding immediate action. Villagers fear that if the monkey is not captured or tranquilized soon, more lives could be at risk. Calls have intensified for the forest department to deploy effective measures to ensure public safety.
The incident has reignited debate over human-wildlife conflict in Odisha, where monkeys often stray into residential areas in search of food. While such encounters are not uncommon, the fatality has underscored the urgent need for intervention.
As of now, the forest department has not issued an official response regarding the incident. However, villagers insist that unless swift action is taken, the situation could spiral out of control.
The tragic death of Sulochana has become a grim reminder of the growing monkey menace in Athagarh block, leaving the community shaken and demanding accountability from the authorities.
