Mayurbhanj, Jun 24: The authorities of Kala Dam, located in Kaptipada block, opened one gate of the dam as its water level approached the danger mark late last night.

According to reports, the dam, which has a full reservoir capacity of 77.7 units, recorded a level of 77.4, following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Similipal Hills.

Taking precautionary action, the authorities decided to open one gate of the dam. The gate is currently releasing 60 cusecs of water per second to relieve pressure.

Authorities have indicated that if rainfall continues, more gates may be opened depending on the situation.

The combined effect of ongoing downpours and water discharge has raised concern for low-lying downstream areas, which may experience localized flooding.

The district administration is on alert and is expected to issue further advisories as conditions evolve.
