Bhubaneswar, Nov 7: The Mortal remains of former Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker Maheswar Mohanty were consigned to flames at the Swarga Dwar here amid full State honour this evening. 

Mohany passed away on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was 67.

The body of Mohanty, also a former Minister, was taken in a grand procession to the State Assembly. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and many other BJD leaders paid their last respects. Thereafter, his body was taken to Puri, his birthplace and constituency. 

Amid the presence of BJD leaders and hundreds of his supporters, his mortal remains were consigned to flames at the Swarga Dwar. 

It may be noted that Maheswar Mohanty had been ailing for some time and was admitted to a private hospital in the capital on November 1, 2023.

A lawyer by profession, Mohanty completed his LLB from Utkal University and MA in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University.

He had won five times from Puri Assembly Constituency. Out of that, Mohanty won once on Janata Dal ticket and four consecutive times on a Biju Janata Dal (BJD) ticket.

Maheswar Mohanty served as the Speaker of Odisha Assembly from 2004 to 2008. In addition, he held several portfolios in the Naveen Patnaik government.
