Bhubaneswar/Rourkela, Nov 15: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday dedicated a major road in Rourkela city to tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda and inaugurated development projects worth Rs1,345 crore, marking the state’s grand celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of the tribal icon.

 

Road Named After Birsa Munda

Majhi announced that the stretch from Hanuman Batika Square to Power House Square in Rourkela will now be known as Birsa Munda Road. He said the leader’s revolution against British rule added a defining chapter to India’s freedom struggle and continues to inspire generations.

 

Development Push in Sundargarh

As part of the state-level Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas celebration in Rourkela, the Chief Minister laid foundation stones for projects worth Rs609 crore in Sundargarh district. He reiterated his government’s commitment to the holistic development of tribal communities, citing initiatives such as forest land rights, livelihood support through the Janjati Jeevika Mission, and financial aid under the Shaheed Madho Singh Hathkharcha Yojana to reduce school dropouts among tribal students.

PM, Pradhan Pay Tributes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation from Gujarat, paid homage to Birsa Munda and highlighted his sacrifices. He reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to tribal empowerment through schemes like PM Janman Yojana, Dharti Aaba Janbhagidari Abhiyan, and Adi Karma Yogi Abhiyan.


Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid homage to tribal freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda on his 150th birth anniversary. In a social media post, Shah described Birsa Munda as not only the pride of tribal society but also of the entire nation.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also paid floral tribute to Birsa Munda. In a post on X, he described the tribal freedom fighter as the pioneer of a transformative movement for protecting the motherland and a symbol of courage, social justice, and cultural pride.


Nationwide Celebration

The nation observed Janjatiya Gaurav Divas to commemorate Birsa Munda’s 150th birth anniversary. Since its inception, November 15 has been marked as Tribal Pride Day, and the celebration has expanded into Janjatiya Gaurav Week, featuring cultural programs, exhibitions, and educational activities across ministries and states to honor tribal heroes.
