Bhubaneswar, Feb 23: Liver of a brain dead girl hospitalised in AIIMS Bhubaneswar was airlifted on Friday evening to New Delhi through a green corridor for transplant of a patient in the national capital, officials said.

According to official sources, the 14-year-old girl identified as Damayanti Mahanta, a Class IX student from Keonjhar district, was under dialysis for the last few months. She was suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). Recently, she developed a brain stroke and was admitted at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on February 15.

Her parents, Banita and Dukhabandhu Mahanta, currently residing in Bhubaneswar, decided to donate her useful organs after she was declared brain dead by doctors.

The parents Banita and Dukhabandhu will take body for conducting the girl’s last rites at their native place in Keonjhar, source said.

On February 15, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced that last rites of organ donors will be performed with full state honours as a recognition of their sacrifice and bravery.
