Bargarh, Feb 23: An exchange of fire took place between police personnel and Maoists near Gandhamardan hill under Paikmal police limits in Odisha's Bargarh district, Bargarh ASP Prahlad Sahai Meena informed on Friday.

Speaking to media persons, ASP Meena said a joint team of Balangir Police and Bargarh Police comprising teams of Special Operation Group (SOG) went out on an anti-naxalite operation, based on a specific intelligence input on Wednesday, near Gandhamardan hill in Bargarh district.

When the operational parties were combing the jungle area in Paikmal area this morning, sudden unprovoked firing came upon them from the Maoists, Meena added saying that an encounter broke out between Maoists and security personnel.

After heavy exchange of fire between police parties and Maoists, the cadres retreated into deep forests. No casualty was reported so far.

During the search of the area carried out subsequently by security personnel, a large quantity of Maoists items were seized by the joint team, Meena said.

Combing operation in the area was underway and IG of the Northern Police Range, Himanshu Lal was monitoring the operation, he added.
