New Delhi, Nov 21: In a surprising turn of events, Australian cricket star David Warner has withdrawn from the upcoming T20 International series against India, just days after Australia's triumphant victory in the ODI World Cup. Warner, who played a pivotal role in Australia's World Cup success, emerging as the team's top run-scorer with an impressive tally of 535 runs at an average of 48.63, has been sent back home.
The 15-man squad, initially announced by Cricket Australia, will now be without Warner's explosive batting prowess. The decision for Warner's early departure was made by the selectors, considering the demanding nature of the World Cup campaign. Despite being a key player, Warner will not be part of the T20I series set to commence on November 23 in Visakhapatnam.
Australia's victory in the ODI World Cup in Ahmedabad has set the stage for another intense clash with India, but without Warner in their lineup. The star opener will redirect his focus towards his impending final appearance in Test cricket. Warner had previously disclosed his decision to retire from Test cricket after Australia's New Year's match against Pakistan in Sydney.
Cricket Australia issued a statement explaining the selectors' choice to release Warner early, allowing him to prepare for his farewell Test. As the cricket world anticipates the T20I showdown between India and the newly-crowned ODI world champions, Warner's absence adds a new dimension to Australia's lineup for the series.
