New Delhi, Jan 16: Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary has alleged that head coach Gautam Gambhir may have played a role in Rohit Sharma’s removal as India’s ODI captain, claiming that Gambhir could have influenced chief selector Ajit Agarkar in taking the decision.

Rohit, who retired from T20 Internationals in June 2024 and Test cricket in May 2025, continued to feature prominently in ODIs and was expected to lead India towards the 2027 World Cup. However, when India’s squad for the Australia ODIs was announced in October, Shubman Gill was named captain, a move that raised eyebrows, particularly as Rohit had lifted the ICC Champions Trophy in his final match as skipper.

Tiwary said that while Agarkar is known to be a decisive personality, such a call could not have been taken in isolation.

“Ajit Agarkar is a decision-maker, but whether he was influenced by someone else is something we need to look at. A lot happens behind the scenes. The coach’s inputs are always there. Both are equally responsible for whatever decision was made,” Tiwary told Sports Tak.

He also expressed disappointment over Rohit’s treatment, calling the move disrespectful to a captain who has won two ICC titles. Tiwary said he has lost interest in watching India’s ODI matches following the change, despite the presence of senior players like Virat Kohli.

Questioning the logic behind Rohit’s removal, Tiwary said the transition to Gill could have been handled better, possibly by allowing Rohit to continue until the New Zealand ODIs.

“There is no cricketing logic behind removing a proven captain like Rohit Sharma. Doubting his ability was a big mistake,” he added.
