Koraput, Dec 18: Koraput district is experiencing one of its coldest spells of the season, with temperatures plummeting sharply across several regions.
The cold wave intensified after Damonjodi recorded a minimum temperature of 2.9°C, marking the district’s lowest reading this winter. Dense fog has added to the weather’s severity, affecting transportation, daily routines and outdoor activities.
Residents are finding it increasingly difficult to step
outdoors during early mornings — up to around 9 AM — and late evenings as
temperatures continue to fall. Many are relying on traditional methods to stay
warm — wrapping themselves in thick blankets and gathering around small fires.

The situation is even more challenging in rural and hilly pockets of the district, where temperatures have dipped further, disrupting normal life and slowing down daily work.

According to the India Meteorological Department, Koraput town recorded a minimum temperature of 7°C, while Semiliguda registered 8°C. Semiliguda, known as one of Odisha’s prominent hill stations, remains among the coldest locations in the state this season. The Met Department has issued an alert for moderate fog, cautioning commuters and residents about reduced visibility during morning hours.
Other regions such as Pottangi, Lamtaput and Laxmipur are also witnessing a significant drop in temperature. With the cold wave setting in earlier this December, weather experts predict that the chill is likely to intensify further in the coming days.
Despite the harsh conditions, the winter season has brought a surge of tourists to Koraput. Thousands of visitors from neighbouring states and districts are arriving to enjoy the cold climate, explore scenic landscapes and savour local winter delicacies. Popular tourist spots are witnessing increased footfall, with many travellers embracing the unique charm of Koraput’s winter.
As the district braces for colder days ahead, authorities
have advised residents to take necessary precautions, especially during foggy
mornings. The combination of low temperatures and dense fog is expected to
continue, making this one of the most notable winter phases for Koraput in
recent years.
