Talcher, Jan 3: A man was brutally killed after being attacked with a screwdriver near the Talcher police station in Angul district, police said on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Santosh Mahapatra, a resident of the Talcher town area.
The accused, identified as Chagala Amant, has been detained by Talcher police, and further investigation is underway. Preliminary findings suggest that the murder stemmed from a financial dispute between the two men.
According to a source, Santosh had earlier been invited by Chagala to cook food at a feast organised a few days ago. During the event, an argument reportedly broke out after Chagala alleged that Santosh had stolen Rs 7,200 from him. Though the matter was not resolved at the time, tensions between the two continued.
On Saturday, the dispute resurfaced near the Talcher police station when the two men encountered each other again. The verbal altercation escalated, during which Chagala allegedly attacked Santosh on the neck with a screwdriver.
Police personnel rushed to the spot and immediately shifted Santosh to Mandapal Sub-divisional Hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared him dead.
Santosh’s wife has alleged that her husband had not been paid for cooking at the feast and was repeatedly demanding his dues, which led to the fatal confrontation. She claimed that the accused reacted violently when Santosh insisted on getting his money back.
Talcher police have seized the weapon used in the crime and are questioning the accused. The scientific team visited the crime scene shortly to collect forensic evidence. The Talcher Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) said that all angles of the case are being examined.
The incident has triggered concern among local residents, especially as it occurred close to a police station in a busy area of the town.
