Balasore , Mar 4: Odisha Police resuced a man, who was allegedly held captive by some miscreants for a ransom of Rs 8 lakh, from Kulatali area in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Wednesday night.
The victim, identified as Tapas Kumar Mohanty of Keshapur village under Soro police station limits in Odisha’s Balasore district, was allegedly kidnapped on February 28.
As per reports, Tapas, who worked as a housekeeper at a guest house in Bengaluru, had come to his native place recently. However, he didn’t return to Bengaluru apprehending further lockdown due to rising cases of Covid-19.
On February 28, he received a call from the miscreants who offered him a good job following which he visited Kolkata on the same day.
To his surprise, the miscreants took him to an unknown place and demanded a ransom of Rs 8 lakh from his family.
Later, the miscreants sent a video clip to Tapas’ wife Sukanti showing her husband tied to a pillar in a hall at gun point, and threatened to kill him if the family members failed to pay the ransom.
Fearing over the threatening, Sukanti reportedly sent Rs 50,000 to the bank account given by the kidnappers and later filed an FIR at Soro police station.
Based on the complaint lodged by Sukanti, the Soro police formed a special team and rescued Tapas from Kulatali area in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district last night.
The miscreants however managed to escape from the spot, police sources said.
