Informing to media on the encounter, Odisha DGP Abhay said SOG and DVF personnel were on a joint combing operation under Jhanj Reserve Forest in the morning when the exchange of fire took place. A group of Maoists who were hiding in the forest opened fire at the police.
As the jawans retaliated with firing in self-defence the Maoist was killed.
One AK-47 rifle, three AK-47 magazines, a few live ammunition and other Maoist items were seized from the spot following the encounter.
While the identification of the dead Maoist couldn’t be established immediately, he is being suspected to be a senior cadre taking into account the fact that AK-47 rifles are given only to senior cadre Maoists to operate.
Through his press address, the DGP has also appealed the Maoists to shun violence to return to the mainstream. Odisha Government has very good rehabilitation scheme for those who choose to surrender.
