The accused has been identified as Kabiraj Behera, a resident of Jhadakata under Kanasa Police Station in Puri.
The authorised officer of LIC of India, Khurda branch had earlier lodged a complaint against Behera alleging that he tendered fraudulent death claims in connivance with nominees of ghost policy holders.
During the investigation the EOW found that during the period of 2013 to 2019 the accused had registered 23 policies in the name of four dead persons, showing them as alive.
While premiums of these policies were being paid regularly for 3 to 5 years, Behera later contrived fake ‘Death Certificates’ of the policy holders and applied for death claims in the name of nominees at LIC Branch Office, Khurda.
LIC India had even released payments against five of these policies, the investigation discovered.
The investigation in the case is underway and the roles of nominees of the 23 policies as well as the LIC officials if any, are being examined, informed an official.
