“Investigation is on. Monitor lizard is schedule-1 species. We are trying to know if more persons are involved in the illegal act. Killing a monitor lizard can attract imprisonment for seven years,” said ACF Panda.
He said five of the seven seized monitor lizards are alive and two dead. While post-mortem was conducted on the two, medical check-up done on five others and they will be released into Bharatpur jungle soon.
It may be noted that two persons of the Tarini Basti were found possessing seven monitor lizards yesterday. Acting on a tip off, Forest Department officials and the Laxmisagar police conducted a joint raid and nabbed them.
According to sources, when killed, a monitor lizard is used for three purposes. While some people eat its meat, its skin is used for making Khanjani (an old musical instrument) and its sexual organ is wanted superstitiously for raising wealth.
