As per reports, a 24-year-old pregnant woman, Malabati Majhi of Bariali village under Turekela block in Balangir district developed labour pain this morning.
Soon, the family members informed the local health centre to send an ambulance. Subsequently, an 108 ambulance arrived, but it could not reach the village due to the lack of proper road connectivity. It stopped around 1.5 km away from the village.
The family members and the ambulance staff decided to carry the woman on the stretcher for 1.5 km to avail the ambulance.
From there, the ambulance took the expectant mother to the Community Health Centre in Kantabanji. Her condition was stated to be stable.
It is not an isolated case in the region. Several villages in the district lack all-weather motorable roads for which patients and expectant mothers are being carried on cot or sling to reach the hospital.
