Bhubaneswar, Jan 12: Ending all waits, the first consignment of 40,800 vials of Covishield vaccine prepared by Serum Institute of India (SII) reached the Biju Patnaik International Airport here from Pune, four days ahead of the launch of the nationwide vaccination drive.
The vials packed in 40 boxes and consisting of 4,80,000 doses were brought by the Cargo flight Spicejet 7466.
Earlier in the day, Health and Family Welfare ACS PK Mohaptra had stated that 1.91 lakh healthcare workers will be vaccinated in the 1st phase. Elderly health workers and the regions with more Corona infections will be given priority.
The vials will be kept at the State Vaccine Centre from where allotted numbers of vaccine bottles will be taken to districts. Vaccination will be undertaken at 160 session sites. A message of vaccination will be sent to all persons who have been enlisted for taking vaccines in the first phase. The vaccination drive will begin very soon, said a health department official.
