The incident which took place on April 11 came to light after a video featuring the incident went viral on social media.
As per the report, one Kirtan Chhatria of Brahmanidungur village who use to perform ‘puja’ of Danda Nacha ‘chhatar’ (umbrella) at him home made an allegation of theft against the victim Mural Kahanr (70) of the same locality on April 11.
Kirtan alleged that Mural stole several ‘puja’ equipments including lamp and bell from his home while he was out to look after crop cultivation.
A ‘kangaroo’ court was called up in the village subsequently in connection with the incident where Mural was produced. During the proceedings of the court Kirtan’s elder brother crossed all limits of humanity and garlanded the victim with shoes, painted his face white, tied hands and paraded across the village.
Though Mural’s family didn’t report the matter to police initially, fearing Kirtan and his family, Sadar Police took suo-motu cognizance in the case after coming across the viral video.
After the victim’s daughter lodged a case in connection with the incident, Sadanand was taken into custody.
Further investigation is underway in the case.
