Angul, Dec 14: Tension prevailed at Angul Collector’s office on Monday after a man who had lost his land to MCL Balaram Project attempted self-immolation demanding a job for him in the coal company.
The victim identified as Suresh Behera (56) of Solada village arrived at the Collectorate at around 11 am along with his son Ajay Behera and tried to immolate himself. However, the policemen deployed on duty there saved him.
Later, in his reaction to media on attempting to take extreme step Suresh said, his plot and house located in Solada village had been acquired by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) authorities for Balaram Project in the year 2014.
“Though, at the time of acquisition of the land the company authorities had promised me for a job as compensation, they are yet to take any action in the same direction. I demand for a job immediately or return of my land,” he added.
As his repeated request for a job in the MCL fell on deaf ears, he chose to immolate self today, Suresh claimed.
While police prevented Suresh from committing suicide, he was produced before the Collector, who gave an assurance to look into his issue soon.
